In 1999, attorney Rob Bilott requested discovery in an environmental suit against DuPont in West Virginia. DuPont responded by delivering three U-Haul truckloads of banker’s boxes—roughly 110,000 pages—seemingly confident that no legal team could ever review them all.
Bilott read them all. It took years, but buried deep within that mountain of paper was a single internal report proving DuPont knew the chemical it was discharging was toxic.
Every litigator knows a version of this burden. An incoming production lands on your desk: 4,000 emails, invoices, and meeting notes. You know that 98% of it is white noise, but you also know that somewhere in the pile are the two or three documents that will make or break summary judgment. Finding them requires weeks of tedious, associate-heavy review.
Today, we are introducing First Pass Review—a new way to triage incoming discovery productions.
Why We Didn't Build Another "Chatbot"
When legal tech vendors apply generative AI to discovery, they almost always take the shortcut: they dump 40,000 pages into a basic AI chatbot.
You ask a question, and the software performs a semantic search to return what sounds nearest to your query. But "semantically near" is not the same as legally relevant. If you don't phrase the question exactly right, a search box will silently skip the critical email that changes your case.
We engineered First Pass Review on a fundamentally different architecture:
- Context First: You upload your operative complaint, answer, and discovery requests. First Pass builds an understanding of your legal theories, factual allegations, and core disputes.
- Every Document Read Individually: First Pass evaluates each document in the incoming production one by one, on its own merits, against the allegations in your case. No keyword lottery. No blind spots.
- A Written Reason for Every Tag: It doesn’t just output a 1-to-3 star score; it gives you a concise memo for each flag (“This email from 4/12 shows Defendant had notice of the defect before the contract was executed, supporting Count II”).
- Structured Work Product: You receive an actionable timeline, claims analysis, and a ranked shortlist with exact page citations.

Discovery software shouldn't require enterprise contracts or opaque "contact sales" tiers. First Pass Review is priced per document processed.
Before you launch a review, you see the exact cost upfront—no ranges, no surprises. Because it is a discrete technology-assisted review expense for a specific matter, it can be passed through to the client as an ordinary litigation disbursement, exactly like a court reporter or deposition transcript.
